Hyundai Veloster by Andrew Tatters
The new Hyundai Veloster which will replace the Hyundai Coupe will goes on sale in early 2011. The Veloster was first seen at the Seoul motor show back in 2007 as a concept car, but its taken four years for the Hyundai Veloster to reach the production line. Surely the Veloster’s most radical design aspect must be the one rear suicide door previewed on the concept car which is similar to those on the Mini Clubman. But Hyundai unlike BMW who has decided not to cater for right-hand-drive market created problems as the Mini Clubman’s only rear door meant stepping out onto roadside which meant negotiating traffic, not good news for parents with young children who choose to use the BMW Clubman for the school run. So Hyundai has decided the rear door will swap sides depending on what market the car is for. The Hyundai Veloster should sit on a modified version of the Hyundai i30 platform. The Veloster will use the firm’s new 1.6 litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine which produces 168 bhp and can achieve 48 mpg. The Hyundai Veloster could also be fitted with the 2.0 litre 181 bhp diesel featured on the Santa Fe, which will help it compete against the Volkswagen Scirocco 2.0 litre TDI its obvious competitor. Cars like the VW Scirocco have helped inject new interest in the small coupe market and all Hyundai simply has to do is match the style and quality of the Volksawagen Scirocco if it is to succeed. The Hyundai Veloster will be sold as a 2+2 coupe and should cost around the £16,000 mark.
